Is He A Prince or A Frog?

The above quote was sent to our staff so that it could be used in class/mentoring lessons and discussions. While the quote is talking about what a woman needs and how a man should act, the reverse is also true. It is important for parents, teachers, and mentors to help students learn to sort through the qualities of those they are going to have a relationship with, whether it is a friendship or dating relationship. They need to think about what type of character they desire in a friend and how they can be a good friend. When it is a dating relationship, it is best for them to decide what their expectations are before they are “caught up” in the moment. It can be exciting to have someone like you and that feeling may make the decisions about whether that person is worthy to be their boyfriend/girlfriend, especially if they haven’t thought about the traits they would want in a boyfriend/girlfriend. Be sure to talk with your child about what are important qualities to have in a friend or boyfriend/girlfriend and what qualities your child should have in order to be a good friend. They need to have respect for themselves and the other person. It is not always easy to sort out the frogs from the princes(s) but thinking things over with a clear head before can help.

Partnering with you,
Jeanne & Gary

New Beginnings

We are now two weeks into the new school year, and I am so encouraged by what I see going on here at TC.  We have an amazing group of Seniors.  Leadership is vital for success in any situation, and I have already witnessed so many examples of servant leadership from our 12th graders.  Whether it is leading worship in chapel, doing small things without being asked because it needs done, or noticing a need and seeking to be the hands and feet of Jesus, this group of Seniors is leading by example.

We have been blessed to have many new students come to TC this year.  I am so impressed with the hearts of and the drive for excellence from the new students.  Genuiness of faith, a focus on academic excellence and gratitude for the sacrifices made for them to be able to attend TC are examplified by these amazing young people.  Please take the opportunity to welcome them and their families as you have the opportunity.

There is also a growing desire for a new beginning in the area of school spirit.  Parents, students and staff are joining together to amp up our efforts in this area.  Christians really can have a great time supporting their school, athletic teams and all that we do without losing their testimony.  This weekend is our first home football game.  Please, come out, get loud, and have a great time in fellowship and support of the athletes and coaches.  There are many opportunities each week to support our students and teams.  Come out, have a great time and enjoy the fullness being part of the TC family.

Last, but not least, we are currently in the second day of Spiritual Emphasis.  We are blessed to have Mr. Adrian Despres leading us this year.  He has a style that captivates and challenges our students and our staff.  We are blessed to have a school where we can openly express our faith and share that faith in a supportive community.  Please be in prayer for our students and their growing faith in Christ Jesus.  May He be blessed in all that we do.

Oh, Be Joyful!

By now, unless you are like the guy in the Geiko commercial who lives under a rock, you have heard of the tremendous devastation in the aftermath of the earthquake that recently struck Japan.  As it turns out, what was once a source of energy, jobs, and public revenue is now causing immense suffering and a threat to those who once welcomed it into their community.  The Daiichi nuclear power plant continues to be a threat, not only to those near the plant, but to many others, both inside and outside of Japan.

We are entering a time of year when there are many things that our students, families, and Troy Christian community look forward to: anticipating the great joy that comes with events like Prom; Spring Musicals; Graduation for our seniors; and the approaching summer.  It is a time to celebrate, culminate, and appreciate all that has been accomplished this school year.  But some of these events can, like the failing nuclear plant in Japan, end up becoming a source of great pain and regret. What’s Your Attitude?

Attitude! That word sparks within us many different reactions. We all know people who “have an attitude”, and we know others with an “attitude of gratitude”. But, truth be told, attitude is something that we all have all of the time. It is our way of being, our approach to living, our way of thinking and feeling. It is an expression of who we are.

Praise be to God that He has not left us wanting in instruction with regards to attitude. The Bible is, in many ways, an attitude instruction manual. The Be- “attitudes” in Matthew 5 give us guidance as to what “way of being” is pleasing to God and gives honor to Him. In fact, the entire Sermon on the Mount is instruction on how to live a life for God and how to be right with our fellow man. Read the rest of this entry »
